My job is to bring out in people what they wouldn’t dare do themselves. I am especially grateful that I have been able to keep my own style over the decades, in spite of the many changes that have taken place in the world of fashion and in its business. It should be natural, and that’s how I like women to look. I like them to feel comfortable and look organic. Dressing is a way of life. Women are women, and hurray for that.

Sometimes incompetence is useful. It helps you keep an open mind. Vanity is the healthiest thing in life. Beauty is perfect in its imperfections, so you just have to go with the imperfections. Awkwardness gives me great comfort. I’ve never been cool, but I’ve felt cool. I’ve been in the cool place, but I wasn’t really cool – I was trying to pass for hip or cool. It’s the awkwardness that’s nice. It pains me physically to see a woman victimized, rendered pathetic, by fashion.

Even Michelangelo got paid for doing the Sistine Chapel. To those artists who say they’re doing it for the love of art, I say: Get real. Fashion to me has become very disposable; I wanted to get back to craft, to clothes that could last. Online media is increasingly influential in fashion. I think God is the most fantastic designer. That is the key of this collection, being yourself. Don’t be into trends. Don’t make fashion own you, but you decide what you are, what you want to express by the way you dress and the way to live.

I don’t like trends. They tend to make everybody look the same. My job is to bring out in people what they wouldn’t dare do themselves. Dressing up. People just don’t do it anymore. We have to change that. I love my beauty. It’s not my fault. I believe in comfort. If you don’t feel comfortable in your clothes, it’s hard to think of anything else.

Design is a constant challenge to balance comfort with luxe, the practical with the desirable. I don’t try to be in fashion; I don’t try to follow trends. You just end up out of fashion that way. Fashion should be fun. It shouldn’t be labelled intellectual. Men don’t want another man to look at their woman because they don’t know how to handle it. I love the 2000s because everyone started to love haute couture.

I’ve always thought of the T-shirt as the Alpha and Omega of the fashion alphabet. It pains me physically to see a woman victimized, rendered pathetic, by fashion. The important thing is to take your time and not get stressed. I am always locked in my design studio. Fashion can be this mysterious thing that you can’t explain.

Design is a series of creative choices – it’s a collaborative effort, an evolutionary process. You choose your fabrics depending upon what you want to say, then you work with mills to get those fabrics. Through the process, you realize what you want it to be. Age is something only in your head or a stereotype. Age means nothing when you are passionate about something. You cannot be creative with people around you. I am what I am. Before I was not so proud to make fashion. My family thought fashion wasn’t very interesting. So I hid that. Women are more sure of themselves today. They don’t have to emulate the way men dress.

Money is the most corrosive aspect of life today because it means that all attention to detail is forgotten. Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening. I can design a collection in a day and I always do, cause I’ve always got a load of Italians on my back, moaning that it’s late. I want to thank all the women who have worn my clothes, the famous and the unknown, who have been so faithful to me and given me so much joy. I feel that things happen for a reason and open up new opportunities.

I love things that age well – things that don’t date, that stand the test of time and that become living examples of the absolute best. All I did my first year at Vogue was Xerox. Women are more sure of themselves today. They don’t have to emulate the way men dress. I am what I am. Before I was not so proud to make fashion. My family thought fashion wasn’t very interesting. So I hid that. For me, art is about learning and about living with people. It’s alive.

There is always an emotional element to anything that you make. We must never confuse elegance with snobbery. Sometimes the simplest things are the most profound. Age and size are only numbers. It’s the attitude you bring to clothes that make the difference. Fashion is a very stressful place to work because of the demands of doing the shows – no one expects a writer to produce two books a year on the dot – but it’s also a very toxic place to work.
